Route 1

Viridian City is a city located in Kanto. It is interlocated between Route 1 and Route 2, and it is impassably the first city players will encounter.

This city houses Viridian Gym, which is presided by Giovanni—the executive head of Team Rocket. While this is the first gym town players will encounter, it is not the first gym they will challenge in Kanto’s successional line of gyms; Pewter Gym is, and Viridian Gym remains inaccessible until the Volcano Badge has been acquired at Cinnabar Island, thereby chronologizing it as the final gym in Kanto.

In order to advance onward to Route 2, a small quest inside the Viridian City School must be completed.

Notable Miscellaneous

Viridian School

Entering the school is how you can continue the progress of the Kanto story. The school can be found just north of the Pokémon Center. Once you have entered, head downstairs and speak with Jackson; he will battle you.

Viridian City Trainers

Jackson

Eevee
Lv. 6

All NPCs cool down after 7 days unless noted contrariwise.

After winning, you can leave the town and head for Pewter City—the site of the first badge.
Should you lose, speak with the receptionist at the school and she will ask you to go speak with Jackson’s parents. Jackson’s mom can be found back in Pallet Town. She will go to the school, follow her and speak with Jackson at the school again. You will now be able to leave Viridian City and continue your journey.

Move Tutors

A move-tutor enclosed between the trees west of the pond will impart the Dream Eater technique to compatible Pokémon for 4,000 per tutee.

Due to the occlusion of the cuttable tree, a Cut-wielding Pokémon or a Tree Axe will be needed on-hand in order for it to be reachable.

NPC Traders

Madeline, found roaming the southeasternmost segment of the city, is willing to trade her level-5 Oddish in return for a Pidgey; however, due to the IV stipulators of the deal, it will require at least 15 IVs in the Attack and Speed stats in order to be a negotiable Pidgey.

It is highly recommended to obtain this Oddish early on if you do not have any other Grass— or Water-type Pokémon, since it has a type advantage against the Rock— and Ground-type lineup deployed by Brock in Pewter Gym.

Officer Jenny bounties

Officer Jenny is a NPC that gives small quests, or ‘bounties’. In Viridian City, she can be found next to the Pokémon Center and will give three different bounties:

  • Beat Bug Catcher Gerald. This bounty requires the player to defeat Bug Catcher Gerald, found in the north-east of Viridian Forest. If he was already defeated prior to accepting the bounty, he will be made available to fight again. The reward for completing this bounty is 3,000.
  • Clear Route 1 of Rattata. The bounty requires the player to obtain 3 Rattata Hair, an held item by Rattatas on Route 1 only. Simply defeating them is not enough, it is necessary to either catch them or use a stealing move like Thief or Covet to take the item. Make sure your Pokémon is not already holding an item, as this will prevent it from taking an item from a wild Pokémon.

When accepting the quest, she will give TM96 (Thief), giving the player the opportunity to complete the quest without finding a Pokémon that can learn item-stealing moves naturally. The reward for completing this bounty is 7,000.

  • Catch a Sentret. As the quest states, the player must simply capture a Sentret and show it to Officer Jenny. The reward for completing this bounty is 7,500.

The player can accept multiple bounties at a time, but each bounty can only be completed once.

Researcher Daryll

Researcher Daryll is located in the northmost house of Viridian City. On the condition that the player has not beaten the gym at Pewter City and obtained the Boulder Badge, he will give a quest to the player. If the player obtained the evolved data of 4 different Pokémon, he will reward the player with an EXP Boost Potion. This can easily be done by evolving Caterpie and Weedle to their final evolution stage.

Intraregional subway

Viridian City is one of the seven destinations of Kanto’s intraregional subway—the intraregional-transit system that is used in Kanto and Johto for traveling between intraregional Pokémon Centers.

Contingent that you have completed the intraregional-subway quest, your passengership will be admissible for a fee of 2,500. This fee will be waived if you have a Transit Pass.

Copycat Lamsie

Copycat Lamsie is an NPC that copies the team of the last player that defeated the city’s gym, in this case, the Celadon City Gym. She will battle you and award you EXP, but no money, making it a great spot to grind just before challenging the gym.

Flying Type Lover

In the northwestern corner of the city, you can find the Flying Type Lover NPC. This NPC will be the first NPC you speak to in order to begin the Pidgeotite (quest).

Viridian Gym

Upon defeating Giovanni, you will procure the Earth Badge; this is the final badge in Kanto’s successional line of gyms and thus will qualify your entrance into the Pokémon League Reception Gate to challenge Kanto’s own Elite Four cadre. Thereupon, Earthquake will be sold by the Gym Guide at 9,000 for one or 36,000 for five. However, the first time you purchase the TM, it will be sold at half the true value, lowering it to 4,500.

Giovanni

Giovanni’s sole deployee is an armor-vested Mewtwo—a nod to the same Mewtwo depicted in its anime debut, which was tethered by an armor suit in order to restrain its otherwise-indomitable power. The armor gives the Mewtwo the Steel type, making it dual type Steel/Psychic. It is to note that battling this Mewtwo will not reward its seen Pokédex entry.
