Blackthorn City is the last Johto city, hosting the final gym of the region. Behind this gym is also located the Dragons Den, a cave that is most known for being one of the best locations to level up.
Blackthorn City is also home to the Dragon Club, a tower that is necessary to visit in order to unlock the Cerulean Cave, although the NPCs inside will make the player work hard for it.
Notable miscellanies
Dragons Den
The Dragons Den is a cave located directly behind the city’s gym, requiring Surf to reach. Unlike in the original games, there is nothing blocking the cave, making it accessible before challenging the gym.
It is most particularly known as one of the best locations to level up, as the Pokémons inside are around level 50 and mostly fully evolved. As such, it is recommended to train there before challenging the Johto Elite Four.
Move Relearner
One of the biregional Move Relearners is stationed in the north-west corner of Blackthorn City.
Any move that the player’s Pokémon can learn by level up can be relearned at the price of 2,000 via the Move Relearner, at the condition that the Pokémon satisfies the level condition for the desired move. This is helpful to recover a move that was overwritten or that was never learned for various reasons.
Dragon Club
There is a tower north-east from the city’s gym called the Dragon Club. This location is most known as being one of the requirements to unlock the Cerulean Cave, or more directly, to unlock the lowest floor of Dragons Den.
There are two NPCs at the top of the tower. The Head Recruiter will give the player a Blackthorn Club Card, or otherwise known as the Dragon Membership card, for the expensive price of 200,000. This will allow the player to receive rewards from the Prize Giver.
The Prize Giver NPC will give the following rewards:
- 90 Pokémon Caught data: Everstone
- 150 Pokémon Caught data: Eviolite
- 240 Pokémon Caught data: Dragon Medallion
The Dragon Medallion is necessary to challenge the Dragonite blocking the way to the lowest floor of Dragons Den.
Shelgon Trader
There is an NPC Trader between the Pokémart and the gym who will trade his Shelgon for the player’s Dragonair. The Shelgon will be initialized at level 15 and holding a Dragon Fang.

Blackthorn Gym
The layout of the gym is a simple, but rather long path. Being the last gym, even the gym’s trainers can be dangerous if unprepared. As such, it is recommended to train the Pokémons in Dragons Den before challenging the gym if they are underleveled.
Upon defeating Claire, the Gym-greeter will start selling the TM94 — Dragon Pulse for the price of 4,250. Furthermore, with the Blackthorn gym being the final gym of the region, all Pokémons caught in the Kanto region will be unlocked and it will be possible to return to the Kanto region.
Gym trainers
Claire
Claire is a Dragon type specialist, although just like Lance, her team has an equal amount of Flying type Pokémons. She also leads with her signature Pokémon, Kingdra, which may throw off players that have already played the original Johto games.
With the varied secondary types she brings, no Pokémon will be able to resist her whole team. However, a Fairy type Pokémon will be the most efficient as none of her Pokémon’s moves are super effective while Fairy type moves will be super effective against three out of her five Pokémons. It is also to note that all of her Pokémons are physically offensive, as such it is also worth bringing a physically defensive Pokémon.
