Violet City is the first Johto city that is home to a gym. Before being able to challenge it, it will be necessary to first visit the Sprout Tower, located in the north of Violet City.
The city also serves as an intersection between 3 routes. On its east is Route 31, from which the city is first accessible. South is Route 32, which will be partly blocked by police officers until the Violet Gym has been completed. On its west is Route 36 which, unlike in the original game, will be completely inaccessible until Goldenrod City‘s gym has been completed.

Violet Gym
The Violet Gym will be blocked by a police officer until the player defeats the Master on the top floor of the Sprout Tower.
The gym layout is one of the most simple. After moving to the second floor, trainers will be waiting for the player to walk on the wooden planks. However, there are also side paths that can be walked on to avoid the Gym trainers entirely.
Upon defeating Falkner, the police officers blocking the path down Route 32 will leave, allowing the player to progress to the next town. The Gym-greeter at the front of the gym will start selling TM94 — Aerial Ace for 1,500.

Falkner
Although Falkner specializes in the Flying type, all of his Pokémon are also of the Normal type. With a team that has nothing special to be afraid of, most Pokémons will be able to handle his team very well, given that they are not weak to the Flying type. However, should a Pokémon specifically be brought to fight Falkner, a Geodude from Dark Cave Entrance/Route 46 or a Mareep from Route 32 are the only two available Pokémons that can easily be caught in the wild. An Onix can also be obtained from the trader in Violet City for a Bellsprout.
