The Hoenn Elite Four is a quartet of prodigious trainers challengers must defeat before battling Steven, the champion. They are challengeable at the Pokémon League Hoenn upon acquiring all of Hoenn‘s badges.

Hoenn Elite Four

The player must fight five difficult trainers, and it is suggested to use Pokémons from previous regions, as the leveling areas of Hoenn are not as good as those available in Kanto and Johto. Each trainer will fight with a full team of 6 Pokémon.

The player will have to fight the five following trainers:

  • Sidney, a Dark type master.
  • Phoebe, a Ghost type master.
  • Glacia, an Ice type master.
  • Drake, a Dragon type master.
  • Steven, the Champion who uses Steel types.

Sidney

Sidney will be the first member of the Elite Four waiting for the player. Using a full Psychic monotype team, he will be particularly vulnerable to Fighting, Bug and Fairy types. Both Fighting and Bug type Pokémon have a few of his Pokemon to watch out for super effective moves, but Fairy Pokémons are left completely unchecked. It is to note that his Absol will always deal powerful Critical hits, potentially taking down Pokémon who have relied on defensive buffs.

Phoebe

Phoebe is the Ghost type trainer, and only has two Pokémons with secondary typing. Dark and Ghost moves will be very efficient against her. However, with over half of her Pokémons knowing Will-O-Wisp, getting in physically could prove to be hard. Defensively, Dark and Normal type Pokémons will have an easy time, blocking all the Ghost moves, but they will have to be careful of her Dusknoir‘s Brick Break.

Glacia

Glacia is the Ice type Elite four, and the player will have to be ready to fight under the hail. Two of her Pokemon, Abomasnow and Vanilluxe, have the ability Snow Warning, and her Pokémon will make full use of it. Ice being a very offensive type while having a very varied moveset amongst her Pokémon, playing defensively is going to be difficult, and as such it is recommended to go offensively with super effective moves. Fire and Rock Pokémons may however not be the most ideal types, due to the very large amount of super effective move she has against those types.

Drake

Just like his name implies, Drake is the Dragon type trainer, and unlike Lance, every of his Pokémon has the type. Fairy Pokémons will thus have a significant advantage, at least until his Dragalge. However, with three double weaknesses to Ice, any Pokémon that knows an Ice move will also prove to be very useful in the battle, especially if they can outspeed his Pokémon. Setting up against him might prove to be difficult, as his Altaria will attempt to disrupt set-ups with Sing, and his other Pokémon all boast strong power.

Steven

Steven may be a Steel type specialist, but three of his Pokémon are lacking the type, instead being of the two other Sandstorm-resistant types Ground and Rock. That said, his team is very defensive, while mostly lacking in speed and offense, at least until his signature Pokémon Metagross. Most of his Pokémon can increase their own stats, and can become very powerful if unlucky. Ironically, Steel type Pokémon resist the entirity of Steven’s Pokémons up to his Metagross, with no normal effective without a secondary typing, and will make the battle very easy, especially if they can heal themselves and either set-up or remove stat changes with a move like Whirlwind.
